William Oscar Sherard was the oldest son born to Exsport and Lucy Barnes Sherard on June 22, 1944, in Wayne County, North Carolina. On Sunday, July 19, 2020, God dispatched an angel to bring him home to spend eternity.
At an early age, William's parents moved to the Micro/Selma Area. He graduated from Richard B. Harrison High, Selma, NC.
William was a faithful and devoted member of White Rock AME Church, Micro, NC. There, he regularly attended Sunday School and served as Steward Pro Tem and a Trustee until his health began to decline. He was then elected Steward Emeritus and Trustee Emeritus. William was also a member of Rough Ashlar Masonic Lodge #52, Selma, North Carolina.
William worked many years with the Johnston County School System and retired in 2008.
William taught the lessons of life under his favorite pecan tree while cooking on the grill and fellowshipping with family and friends. All looked forward to eating his meats and drinking his homemade lemonade at church and family gatherings.
William was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Brenda Sherard and Michelle Richardson, a brother, Kenneth Sherard, and a brother-in-law, Jesse Futrell.
He leaves cherished memories to his loving and devoted wife of 55 years, Shirley Smith Sherard; his two biological daughters Wanda (Larry) Dublin of Raleigh, NC, and Karen Sherard of the home. He also leaves two daughters of the heart, Gail (Joe) Perkins, of Augusta, GA and Erica Tee Smith of Durham, NC; and two granddaughters Alexandria and Tiahna Dublin, one grandson, DeAntonio Dublin, and one granddaughter of the heart, Katelyn McNeil.
William also leaves cherished memories to his siblings: Carlene Powell, Charlotte, NC; Frank (Barbara) Sherard, Selma, NC; Hannah (Raymond) Smith, Durham, NC; Elton (Angie) Sherard, Glenarden, MD; Evelyn Sherard, Birmingham, AL; Jacqueline (Tony) Lassiter, Raleigh, NC; and Belinda Futrell, Stone Mountain, GA; additionally, to his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Marie Revell, Delois Gainey, John and Laura Smith, Paulette Bryant, Millard Smith, Edna and Dan Blue, Ben Smith, Turner and Ilene Smith, Malcolm and Gwendolyn Smith, Byron and Laurie Smith, Ber-nard and Yvonne Smith and Sandy Richardson, and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
