It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Vera Lee Bates, who departed this life peacefully on December 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Vera Lee Bates was a classy woman who truly knew how to live. Born in Mobile, Alabama, Vera grew up surrounded by Southern roots, strong family ties, and a spirit that would carry her far beyond her hometown.

She later married the love of her life, Willie Melvin Bates, Sr., whose service in the United States Army led the family on many adventures across the country and overseas. Wherever life took her, Vera made herself right at home and usually made sure there was laughter, music, and a good time along the way.

After Willie’s military retirement, the Bates family settled in Chester, Pennsylvania, where Vera spent most of her life building lasting friendships and raising a family she adored. She worked at Scott Paper Company, where she was known as a dedicated employee and ultimately retired after many years of service. Even in her working years, Vera never forgot to enjoy life because, as she always said. “Party, party, party…life is too short, so enjoy it while you can.” And she meant it.

Vera is preceded by her late husband, Willie Bates, Sr., (2000) and survived by her six beloved children, Renee (Micheal Crumble), Latange, Irish (Michael Jefferson), Willie, Katrina and Jamar (Regina Mixon Bates). She is also cherished by 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, her loving sister Betty Martin, her close friend Carrie Corrigan, and a host of other dear friends and extended family members.

Vera’s legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will continue to inspire all who were blessed to be a part of her life.
