Mattie Vivian Hill Williams

August 10, 1928 — August 27, 2021

Vivian H. Williams was the youngest of seven children born to Rev. Winfred Steward Hill and Mattie Harvey Hill. She was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina on August 10, 1928, Sunset August 27, 2021. Vivian always loved being in the church. As the story goes, she as a young child would hold her own church service singing and preaching.
She met her lifelong partner, Bennie Williams, through an interesting path. She knew Bennie's parents before meeting him but once they met, they did not part.
Educated at the P.W. Moore High School in Elizabeth City, Vivian and Bennie were taught by her oldest sister, Minnie H. McClease whom she took care of for 13 years before passing. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Elizabeth City State University with B.A. in Education. Vivian and Bennie were lifetime Alumni Members at Elizabeth City State University. Vivian taught school in Halifax and Johnston Counties for a combined 36 years. She thoroughly enjoyed working with children. Vivian's dedication to her students and education was witnessed as a member of the "Grade Mother's" group. Vivian would wash clothes for kids to wear at school who were less fortunate. Bennie, Vivian's second born, had a classmate that smelled of urine every day. She would have fresh pants and a shirt for him to wash up and put on, unbeknownst to us, he had to share the bed with 4 younger siblings.
Vivian volunteered at First Missionary Baptist Church as a Sunday school teacher, choir member, on the Deaconess Board and as church secretary. She enjoyed working with the church in different aspects while trying to live a life that God had ordered.
Vivian was a lifetime member of the NAACP and was a Charter member of the Johnston County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was a member from 1960 until her passing.
Vivian was a member of Lily of the Valley Chapter #53, OES Chapter Auxiliary of Prince Hall Grand Lodge, from 1963 until her passing.
Vivian was a member of Mizpah Court # 79 Imperial Court of Daughters Auxiliary of the A.E.A.O.N.M.S, Inc. from 1971 until her passing.
Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie L. Williams, Sr. They were married for 65 years. She is survived by her daughter, Ms. Barbara J. Williams and her son, Bennie L. Williams Jr. of Winston Salem, and one grandson, Bennie L. Williams III also of Winston Salem, North Carolina.
