Visitation
Mother Ruth "Helen" Artis Poston of Four Oaks, North Carolina was born in Ingrams Township, North Carolina on March 1, 1933 from the union of Wade and Vauline Artis. She transitioned from labor to reward on January 27, 2021 in her home, surrounded by her family.
Helen, as she was affectionately known, became responsible for raising her siblings at a very young age, after the passing of her parents. She attended the Johnston County School System.
Mother Poston married the love of her life, Deacon Charles Poston, Sr., in 1949. To this 71-year union were born eight loving children: Carolyn, Charles, Jr., James "Mike", Larry, Jerry, Pamela, Dennis, and Danny.
Mother Poston was a devoted worker and retired from the Fieldcrest Company in Smithfield, North Carolina to care for her son, Mike. She dedicated many years of her life to his care and often testified that it was Mike's faith which increased her own and brought her closer to God.
Throughout Mother Poston's life, she dedicated herself to serving others, ensuring that no one would go hungry in her presence. Oftentimes, Helen would not only feed her family, but she would also feed the community. On any given Sunday, people would visit her home for dinner and dessert including her famous chicken pastry, pineapple cream cheese cake, and sweet potato pies. Helen truly loved to cook for and fellowship with those who crossed her path and ensured her home was welcoming to all who visited.
In the late1970's, she was given the title of Church Mother and served faithfully under the leadership of several Pastors. As a devoted member of Word of Faith Christian Church, she shared Christian love with her church family for many years, developing life-long relationships, and remaining committed to the work of the Lord. As a result, many people became a part of her extended family and souls were led to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Mother Poston served the church in many capacities including: Benevolent Secretary and Treasurer, Member of the Senior Choir, Member of Willing Workers, Advisor of the Youth Adult Choir, Chair of the Culinary "Kitchen & Fellowship Hall" Ministry, Chair of the Mother Board, faithful Sunday School attendee, Bible Study scholar, Member of the Home Missions Circle, Trustee, and Executive Board member. Mother Poston also founded nursing home ministries at the Oasis and Smithfield Manor nursing homes, serving and witnessing to the elderly for over 30 years.
Mother Poston was the founder of the James "Mike" Poston Scholarship, which has awarded academic scholarships to deserving college students across the United States for over 20 years. She was also an active member of the Community Outreach Prayer Group in Johnston County, North Carolina.
Mother Poston was preceded in death by two sons, Mike and Jerry Poston; four brothers, Luke Artis, Albert Leonard Artis, Ralph Shelton Artis, and James "Glen" Artis; and one sister, Blondie L. Artis Walker.
