Obituary

Freddie Kay Devone, 67, of Smithfield, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 14, 2025, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Early Life Freddie was one of 18 children, born into a large and loving family. Growing up with so many brothers and sisters shaped him into a man who valued family, loyalty, and love throughout his life.

Career and Hobbies He spent many years working in heavy machinery and warehousing, where he was respected for his strong work ethic and reliability. Outside of work, Freddie enjoyed simple but meaningful pastimes. He loved tending his garden, carefully growing fruits and vegetables, and often spent time in his workshop building and creating alongside his brothers and children. His hands were always busy—whether crafting something new or building lasting memories with the people he loved.

Family Freddie was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Deborah Joyce Burgess Devone (1995), and his son, Decarus Burgess (November 4, 2023). He was also preceded by his parents, Jerry and Lillie Mae Devone; his brothers James, Edward, Kenneth, Ray, William, George, and Wade; and his sisters Thelma, Elma, Jean, Jane, and Diane.

He leaves to cherish his memory three children: Jeremi Devone, Freddie Devone Jr., and Caron Devone; three beloved grandchildren: Kamori, Lillian, and Isaac; and his siblings: Betty Ingram of Clinton; Jerry Devone Jr. (Maime) of Maryland; Bobby Devone of Newton Grove; John Devone of Clinton; Jimmy Devone (Toni) of Benson; and Jackie Devone (Shirley) of Newton Grove. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family who will continue to honor his memory.

Tribute Freddie will be remembered for his warm heart, quiet strength, and gentle sense of humor. He had a gift for making others feel valued—whether through a shared laugh, a helping hand, or words of encouragement. His love for family was unwavering, and his legacy of kindness, hard work, and devotion will live on in all who knew him.
