Our beloved, Effie Jane Godette Toon, 92, gained her angelic wings on July 4,2026. She was born on January 9, 1934, in Havelock, North Carolina, to thelate Sir Walter Godette and Carrie (Barrett) Godette.
Effie attended primary school in Havelock, North Carolina. As a young child,she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior as a member of Craven CornerMissionary Baptist Church. As a young adult, she became a member ofMiracle Campground Pentecostal Holiness Church in Harlowe, NorthCarolina.
In May 1952, she married the late Roscoe M. Toon, and nine children wereborn to this union. She was an exceptional stay-at-home mother who instilledstrong moral and Christian values in all of her children and those whose livesshe touched. Gospel music filled her home daily, creating an atmosphere oflove, faith, and praise. Effie, along with three of her daughters, formed agospel singing group known as "The Gospel Truths."
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sir Walter and Carrie Godette; hergreat-grandmother, Margaret Ann Godette; her siblings, Cleveland Godette,Lingberg Godette, and James Arthur Godette; three daughters, JuanitaBryant, Rose M. Foreman, and Bernadette "Lou" Harris; her grandson, TyroneButts; and her great-granddaughter, Jaliya Kindred.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory six children: Gloria M. Godette ofHavelock; David Lee Toon of Raleigh, North Carolina; James (Jimmy) R. Toonof Anchorage, Alaska; Janice "Theresa" Wright (Bernard) of Locust Grove,Georgia; Douglas M. Toon (Sandy) of Columbus, Georgia; and Marilyn Melisa(Lisa) Toon of Smithfield, North Carolina.
Effie was also a proud and devoted grandmother to twenty-six grandchildren,numerous great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She also leavesher special and loving Aunt Lorraine Gutherie of Durham, North Carolina. Inaddition, she leaves behind three nieces, one nephew, grandnieces,grandnephews, and a host of cousins, extended family members, and dearfriends who will forever cherish her memory.
Mother will always be remembered for her strong faith in God, her beautiful,warm, and nurturing spirit, her strength, generosity, and unwaveringcompassion for others. Her legacy of demonstrating unconditional love toeveryone will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
