Daniel D. Russell, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, entered into glory on January 14, 2024. He was born at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, N.Y., where his four siblings and, later, four children were also born. He was the proud son of WWII veteran, Philip Ambrose Russell, and Marjorie Russell. He graduated from Susquehanna Valley High School in 1967 and served in the U.S. Navy for six years, four of which were during the Vietnam War, on board the USS Lloyd Thomas. He married Marie-Catherine Whitehouse on May 5, 1973. Together, they raised four children in Conklin, N.Y. Daniel served as a volunteer fireman for more than a decade and retired from IBM (later EIT) after 25 years and moved to Raleigh, N.C. to be closer to his children and grandchildren. He and Cathie enjoyed an active decade of warmer weather, new friendships, time with family, and travel before Daniel was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2019. During five years of courageous battle, he remained as cheerful, optimistic, and full of hope as he'd lived the rest of his seven-plus decades. Daniel passed peacefully, surrounded by friends and family, who will feel his absence daily and remember his gentle nature and devotion to friends, family, faith, and country. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Cathie, their four children, Eric, Christa, Luc, and Rebecca, his brother David and sisters Judy and Janet and their children, along with his many beloved grandchildren and new great grandchild.
A memorial service will be held in his honor at Cornerstone Church, 9725 Fayetteville Rd, Raleigh, NC 27603, on Saturday, February 3 at 10 a.m. Lunch served immediately following.
