In Loving Memory of Carmen Elena Hernandez October 22, 1949 – July 20, 2026Virginia Beach, Virginia With profound sadness and immense love, we announce the passing of Carmen Elena Hernandez, who was born on October 22, 1949, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Carmen lived a life defined by unwavering devotion to her family, tireless work ethic, strength, and a heart that welcomed everyone she met.On June 12, 1970, Carmen married Carlos Hernandez, Sr. Together they shared 56 years of marriage, building a home filled with love and enduring family traditions.Carmen was the proud and devoted mother of three children: Vanessa Hernandez Glenn (Steve), Carlos Hernandez, Jr. (Sheila), and Jose Hernandez (Nakota). Her greatest joy was her family, and her 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immeasurable happiness to her life.Known for her incredible work ethic, Carmen dedicated 30 years of service to Bayside Elementary School, in Virginia Beach, where she began as a volunteer before becoming an employee in 1987. She faithfully served the school community until her retirement in 2017, touching the lives of countless students, families, and colleagues through her kindness, compassion, and dedication. In addition to her career at Bayside, Carmen worked for more than 20 years at the Virginia Beach Resort Hotel & Conference Center, often balancing two jobs to provide for and support her family. Carmen embraced life with joy and love. She was an avid sports fan whose loyalty never wavered from her beloved Washington Commanders—or, as she would proudly say, the "Redskins"—and the New York Yankees. She found great happiness in flowers, especially roses, whose beauty and grace reflected her own gentle spirit. She also loved cardinals, finding comfort and joy on their visits. A breast cancer survivor, Carmen faced every challenge with courage, faith, and grace.Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in knowing that her legacy lives on through the family she loved so deeply. She will be enormously missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
